Music is for sharing

Hi all.

There is some truly incredible music out there at the moment and this blog could easily end up the size of Wikipedia if I tried to share it all right now, but I fancied sharing a few things I've been enjoying on Youtube recently ( inspired by this blog post by solo bassist and all round clever person Steve Lawson).

So, first off, here's an amazing piece by acoustic guitarist Petteri Sariola..

Next up, one of my favourite singer songwriters ( who also happens to be an incredible bassist) Seth Horan..

I actually discovered Petteri through Seth's videos  of their tour together earlier this year ( which you can watch on Seth's Youtube channel )

Sticking with bass, here's a beautiful fretless piece by Jeff Schmidt..

And as he inspired this post, here's a clip of Steve Lawson playing the beautiful "Jimmy James"..

And now some guitar from the fantastic Matt Stevens...

I'm actually in the process of remixing this track and the source tracks are so tight it's frightening :-)

And finally ( for now anyway), one of my favourite solo bassists, Trip Wamsley..

If you like what you've seen here, please buy visit their sites, buy their music, and support them in creating more great music!

That is all.

Take care

New albums available for download

Hi.

As you may know, I took part in this year’s RPM Challenge, where you have to record an album’s worth of material (10 songs or 35 minutes) of music during the month of February. I decided this year to try recording daily improvisations and see what I came up with and, by Feb 20, I had around 40 recorded. Some were on bass, some on synths, ukulele, guitar – anything I could lay my hands on really!

After much listening, I decided on 30 which I thought were releasable and these are now available in two volumes – Notebook 1 and Notebook 2.

You can listen to them free ( click on the songtitle in the player to select a different track) and then you can download them, complete with PDF liner notes) for whatever price you want, even download them for free if you want to.

If you like them, please tell people. You can click the “Share” button on the player and it will allow you to add it to your blog, website, whatever you fancy.

Take care
Alun

Assorted Christmas Things

Hi everyone.

Christmas is fast approaching and I have a few festive goodies online so thought I'd round them up here...

  • Free solo bass version of O Holy Night

O Holy Night by Alun Vaughan

Notation and tab for this arrangement will be sent out to my mailing list in the next few days, so if you fancy a copy you can sign up at http://www.alunvaughan.com/contact.shtml

  • Christmas Songs for Bass

I created this PDF collection of solo bass transcriptions last year and it's proved to be quite popular :-) It contains:

  • 10 Christmas songs arranged for solo bass guitar in notation and tablature. All arrangements are playable on a 4 string 20 fret bass so can be played on 99% of the instruments out there.
  • Transcriptions of just the melodies in easy to play keys, ideal for beginners
  • Two mini lessons, one on playing natural harmonics and one on using the two handed tapping technique used in the arrangement of Jingle Bells

The songs included are :
Auld Lang Syne, Away In a Manger, Ding Dong Merrily On High/Deck The Halls*, In The Bleak Midwinter, Jingle Bells, Joy To The World, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Silent Night, The First Noel
*These are arranged as a medley and also appear as seperate melodies.

You can pick it up at http://www.bassbook.co.uk/shop.htm for the princely sum of £3, in which case I'll email you the zip file ASAP ( there may be a tiny delay if I'm away from my laptop but am checking daily), or you can get it online for $5.49 at the wonderful http://www.learnthelowend.com

  • Merlin's Gavel Christmas single

Finally, a bit of a silly one - the 43 second "Christmas single" by my imaginary prog rock alter-egos, Merlin's Gavel

Jingle Bells by Merlin's Gavel

Hope you all have a fantastic Christmas!

Cheers

Alun

Jon Gomm

OK, here goes with my first attempt at using the mighty Posterous. In a few week's time, one of my favourite guitarists and singers, Jon Gomm, releases his new album "Don't Panic" so I thought I'd share a couple of clips - first his video for the tune "Loveproof"   and then a performance of a tune which astounds me everytime I see/hear it - "Waterfall".
